Why Your Driveway Should Help the Environment (and Your Planning Permission)
If you’ve been researching new driveways, you’ve likely seen the acronym SuDS pop up. It stands for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems, and while it sounds like technical jargon, it is actually the most important legal and environmental factor in modern paving.
At Spectacular Driveways, we’ve seen the landscape of Yorkshire change over 40 years. As more front gardens are paved over with non-porous materials like traditional concrete and tarmac, the rainwater has nowhere to go. It hits the surface, runs into the road, and overwhelms our local sewer systems, leading to flash flooding.
In 2008, the UK government changed the law to address this. Here is why choosing a SuDS-compliant Resin Bound system is the smartest move for your home.
1. The 2008 Planning Permission Law
Many homeowners are unaware that you now need Planning Permission to pave a front garden larger than five square metres if you are using a non-porous material (like standard tarmac or concrete) that doesn't have its own drainage system.
Planning applications are slow, expensive, and not guaranteed to be approved. However, because our Resin Bound surfacing is fully permeable, it is classified as a SuDS-compliant surface.
-
The Benefit: In the vast majority of cases, you can install a Spectacular Resin Driveway without any planning permission at all. We handle the compliance so you can focus on the design.
2. How the 'Filter' Works
A Spectacular Resin Bound driveway isn't just a pretty surface; it’s a high-performance filter. When we mix our natural stone with high-grade resin, we leave microscopic "voids" between the pebbles.
When the Yorkshire rain hits the drive, it doesn't "pond" or run off into the street. Instead, it filters through the resin layer at a rate of roughly 850 litres per square metre, per minute. From there, it passes into our open-graded sub-base and back into the natural water table.
-
No Puddles: You’ll never have to jump over a "lake" to get into your car.
-
Reduced Ice: Because water doesn't sit on the surface, the risk of "black ice" in the winter is significantly reduced.
3. Protecting the Yorkshire Landscape
Huddersfield, Halifax, and the surrounding valleys are prone to water runoff issues. By installing a SuDS-compliant driveway, you are playing a vital role in protecting your local community.
-
Reducing Sewer Pressure: By managing water where it falls, you prevent the local drainage network from backing up.
-
Natural Filtration: As water passes through the stone and sub-base, many surface pollutants (like small amounts of car oil) are naturally filtered out by the ground before they reach our rivers.
4. The Spectacular SuDS Specification
To be truly SuDS compliant, the entire build must be permeable, not just the top layer.
-
We install a Geo-textile membrane to prevent the soil from mixing with our stone.
-
We use MOT Type 3 hardcore (which is "reduced-fines") instead of Type 1. This ensures the sub-base has the "air-space" required to hold water while it drains away.
-
Our binder course is open-graded asphalt, specifically chosen for its massive drainage capacity.
The Spectacular Verdict
Choosing a SuDS-compliant Resin Bound driveway is an investment in your home’s legality, safety, and the local environment. With 40 years of experience, we ensure that your new entrance doesn't just look spectacular—it performs spectacularly too.
